Fundraising Can Be Enjoyable

Fundraising Can Be Enjoyable

Over a decade later, I still remember this quote from a fundraising study. "Fundraising is not something I enjoy doing. I don't like having to ask people. And the problem in this community is that this is a very involved community of people, and you just get to the...

Uncharitable: Risk and recklessness.

"We just can't seem to find any good candidates. So, where do we go from here?" The Chairman asks the rest of the nonprofit board in a meeting. Other board members sit in silence. No one sees, or wants to admit, the real issue. This board of a mid-size nonprofit has...

Lessons from movie directors

Some of you may get upset with me for this. I've avoided watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy all these years. To be honest, fantasy adventure movies are not my favorite, and I thought they would be too long. Now that I've enraged some of you, I caved and finally...

I wish that I knew what I know now…

Have you ever looked back on some of your old work? It can be fun to reflect on those memories and special projects. It can also be a humbling experience. I came across some work from over ten years ago and thought, "I wish I knew then what I know today." So what are...

Did you know halftime is much more important than just giving players time to rest. That’s only part of it. Halftime is a crucial moment for strategizing and making adjustments for the second half. Teams enter the game with a plan, and halftime allows them to...

Summer Reading List for Fundraisers

Summer, Summer, Summertime... "... time to sit back and unwind" is what DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince said in 1991. For nonprofit leaders and fundraisers, it's a real challenge to find time for rest and relaxation. We all know by now how important it is, but it's...

the team you’ve always wanted

We like to say that building a brand is like baking a cake. In order for a quality cake (brand) to be made, it requires several ingredients in the correct portions applied at the right time according to a recipe. Many business owners attempt to build their own cake (brand) without following any sort of recipe or plan. They stumble from vendor to vendor purchasing individual ingredients (i.e. logo, website, graphics, signs, print) and attempt to produce ingredients themselves. They then mix these ingredients together and find their cake (brand) does not actually appeal to consumers as planned. Next they jump into advertising with the hopes that something will stick. Chances are they will spend thousands trying to reach customers and create individuality.

Branding can be a highly confusing and very costly venture when attempted without a recipe!
